Rare Old Cookbooks Revived Digitally
DATELINE: Detroit, Michigan - December 2006
Judith Buhl, a woman in the greater Detroit area, has purchased a quantity of old English cookbooks, (mixed with some others), some of which are over 100 years old. These have been turned into digital files, and Buhl is now able to market them from her new website, JustGoodCooking.com She opens her web business with just two of the cookbooks available for very reasonable cost and immediate download.
Her friend in Canada, Ruth Marlene Friesen, owner of Azaleas Virtual Assistants, has web design skills, and is helping Buhl add more of the e-cookbooks as they are able to get them set up, each on its own web page.
The first two e-Cookbooks are Bread and Biscuit Baker, and Delicious Soups. A more modern e-cookbook with 27 Pumpkin Pies (or similar desserts) is offered as a gift to those who purchase either of the first two books offered.
The recipes in these older cookbooks do not look quite like the ones we are used to seeing in modern cookbooks. Ingredients are often not listed separately, and the descriptions of how to create the dishes sometimes read like short narratives.
However, as these two women keep examining more of these books, they discover that there are valuable tips and tricks to be learned that can be applied to our modern cooking. Some things like taking a pot of soup on or off the fire in a hearth must be translated as take the pot off the stove's element. Most thinking cooks who can read English are able to take such details as a matter of course.
The Bread and Biscuit Baker is a small manual for a bake an sweet shop in Ye Old England. If the quantities are followed, you will end up with large batches of breads, cakes, and candies. But this makes the book a great a resource for fundraisers. Quantities of course, can be halved or quartered.
Other cookbooks are to follow with themes like Chinese cooking, crockpot recipes, gifts to make in jars, vegetable meals, Italian recipes, Cajun recipes, and many more topics.
JustGoodCooking.com has a recipe database which visitors who come now while it is still new, may join as lifetime free members. When it grows larger, memberships fees will be charged.
Buhl with her new JustGoodCooking.com business is offering a unique service in the very popular cookbooks and recipe genre online.
Since cooks do online searches when they have an unfamiliar ingredient, or need recipes of a particular kind, Buhl hopes to have her site become a favorite resource.
